How do I maintain my SHRM Certification after I pass?
Congratulations on earning your SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP! To keep your certification active, you’ll need to recertify every three years.
SHRM Recertification Requirements
You must:
Earn 60 PDCs (Professional Development Credits) within a 3-year cycle
OR retake and pass the SHRM exam
SHRM provides a Recertification Guide that outlines how to earn and track PDCs. You’ll have access to this guide in your SHRM portal account.
3 Categories for Earning SHRM Recertification Credits
SHRM allows you to earn Professional Development Credits (PDCs) through three main categories. You can earn credits in one category or across all three, depending on your activities and interests:
1. Advance Your Education
Earn credits by participating in learning activities that expand your HR knowledge and skills. This includes SHRM-approved courses, webinars, workshops, conferences, and even college or university programs. Most self-paced and instructor-led courses fall into this category. Note: The credits you earn from your HR Jetpack annual subscription fall under this category.
2. Advance Your Organization
Get credit for applying your HR expertise to real-world challenges at work. This includes leading a significant project, solving a business problem through an HR initiative, or implementing a new HR strategy or system that impacts your organization in a meaningful way.
3. Advance Your Profession
Earn PDCs by contributing to the HR field beyond your own organization. Examples include teaching or speaking at HR events, writing articles or blogs related to HR, serving in a volunteer HR role, or participating in research that benefits the profession.
💡 You’re not required to earn credits in all three categories—you can earn all 60 credits just under "Advance Your Education" with our HR Recertification Credit Subscription.
